Towle Sterling Christmas Melodies Medallion – 1979 Edition
Sterling Silver Ornament with Original Packaging.
This elegant collectible is the 1979 Towle Sterling Christmas Melodies Medallion, part of the annual series produced by Towle Silversmiths. Crafted in solid sterling silver, the ornament reflects Towle’s reputation for high-quality metalwork, intricate engraving, and timeless holiday artistry.
Front Design
The front of the ornament displays a beautifully detailed and symmetrical design:
• Elongated Hexagonal Shape
The piece is crafted in an elongated hexagon, giving it a unique silhouette compared to round or oval ornaments. Its beveled edge is clean and refined, framing the ornament like a miniature plaque.
• Central Scroll and Foliage Motif
At the center is an ornate flourish of scrolling leaves and stylized foliage. The design is deeply engraved, creating texture and dimensionality. This scrolling motif serves as the decorative heart of the ornament.
• Ring of Angels in Round Medallions
Surrounding the central flourish is a circular arrangement of eight small angels, each positioned inside its own circular panel.
The angels appear in graceful, almost musical poses, consistent with Towle’s Christmas themes of harmony and celebration. They are finely etched, with each figure rendered in delicate lines against the smooth silver background.
• Subtle Bordering
The outer border features double-line engraving that adds structure and depth. Combined with the internal scroll patterns, the front design gives the ornament a rich, classical feel.
Back Design
The reverse side of the ornament features a completely different artistic treatment:
• Faceted Geometric Pattern
The entire back is sculpted with a crystalline, faceted motif, resembling fractured ice, gemstone facets, or stained-glass segments.
The multi-angled surfaces reflect light brilliantly, giving the reverse side a jewel-like sparkle when displayed.
• Maker’s Mark and Sterling Stamp
At the lower edge of the reverse, the stamping reads:
“TOWLE”
“STERLING”
© 1979”
These marks verify the piece’s authenticity, material, and production year.
• Integrated Hanging Loop
At the top is a fixed sterling loop designed to accommodate a ribbon or hanger. The loop is original and formed from the same silver material, maintaining the continuity of the ornament’s craftsmanship.
