To protect the etrog during the holiday, it is traditionally wrapped in silky flax fibers and stored in a special box, often made from silver. This sterling silver etrog box is hand-hammered, giving it a masculine look. It stands on four ball-feet raising it off the surface. The inside is gold washed to protect it.
